How to launch a website on your own domain

Understand what changes when your website moves to your own domain, and what stays the same for your business and visitors.

When you launch a website on your own domain, the main change is the address people use to find you. Instead of sending visitors to a temporary preview address, you can direct them to the web address that belongs to your business. Your pages, enquiry forms and content do not need to become something different simply because the address changes.

For many owners, the domain step sounds more technical than it is. It does matter, though, because your domain can also be connected to email, existing listings and links you have already shared. Knowing what changes, and what does not, helps you prepare without guessing.

How to launch a website on your own domain

A domain is the address typed into a browser, such as yourbusiness.co.uk. Launching means connecting that address to the finished website so visitors see the live site when they use it.

With Ez, you first receive a seven day preview at an Ermaz address. This gives you time to read the pages, check the contact details, try the forms and ask for changes before paying. Once you approve the launch, your own domain, hosting and HTTPS are included in the $149 launch payment. The source files are also downloadable.

The website itself is not rebuilt at this point. The approved pages, images and forms move from the preview into the live version connected to your domain. A small business website should be ready to use before that connection is made, rather than relying on launch day to reveal missing information.

What changes after launch

The first obvious change is the address used in your marketing. You can put your domain on business cards, social profiles, invoices, vehicle signage and directories. Use the same spelling everywhere, including any www version if you choose to use one.

Search engines also need time to discover and process the live address. That is normal. A new domain does not create instant visibility, and changing the address alone does not guarantee rankings. What helps is having clear pages that explain your work, service areas where relevant, and a straightforward way to enquire.

You may also need to update places where your old web address appears. That can include:

  • your Google Business Profile and other directory listings
  • social media profile links
  • email signatures and printed material
  • adverts, booking profiles or partner pages
  • any QR codes that point to a previous address

If you had an earlier website, tell Ermaz about it in the brief or during review. The old address, the domain access you have and the pages people may already visit are useful details for planning the change.

What does not change

Your business does not need new claims, new prices or new contact details just because the site is live. In fact, the live version should preserve the details you have confirmed. Ez checks the brief and identifies information that could not safely be stated, rather than making up hours, qualifications, prices or service promises.

Your enquiry process also stays practical. Visitors can send an enquiry from the relevant page, with up to four photos where photos help explain the job. They return to the page with a confirmation, you receive the lead by email with any photos attached, and the enquiry remains in your records.

Your ownership of the site matters too. Hosting and HTTPS are included at launch, and you can download the source files. Optional Website Care is separate from launching. At $39 a month, it includes a weekly maintenance visit, a weekly article and Front Desk, which sends an automated first reply to every enquiry. You can cancel Website Care at any time without taking the site down. See the full pricing if you are deciding whether you need it.

Check these details before connecting the domain

A little preparation avoids confusion. Confirm the domain spelling you want visitors to use, and make sure you can access the account where an existing domain is managed. If the domain is tied to business email, say so before changes are made. Email settings may need to be preserved separately from website settings.

Read every contact method on the preview as a visitor would. Test the phone number, email address, map link and enquiry form. Check that the pages describe the services you actually provide, and that any areas covered, opening times or prices are accurate. If a detail is not ready to publish, it is better to leave it out or confirm it than to guess.

Finally, decide when you will start sharing the domain. You do not need a large announcement. Updating the places customers already use to find you is a sensible first step.

Questions about launching on your own domain

Do I need to buy hosting separately?

No. Hosting and HTTPS are included in the $149 launch payment. You do not need to arrange a separate hosting package for the Ez website.

Will my business email stop working when the website goes live?

Not necessarily, but you should say if your domain is used for email before the website is connected. Website and email settings are different, and existing email settings need to be taken into account.

Can I make changes after the site is live?

Yes. You can ask for changes as your business information develops. Website Care is optional if you want the weekly maintenance visit, weekly article and automated first enquiry reply.

Will a new domain put me at the top of Google?

No. A domain launch does not guarantee search rankings. It gives customers a consistent address for a clear, useful website, while search engines discover and assess the pages over time.

Just tell Ez about your business.

Say who it serves and what the website should do, the way you would tell a friend. Ez builds the site and shows it working before you pay anything.
